An old still interesting Project carried out by Mammoet back in 2014.
Our El Segundo Refinery supplies more than 20 percent of all motor vehicle fuels consumed in Southern California and nearly half of the jet fuel at Los Angeles International Airport.
To help ensure its continued operation, we recently replaced six massive coke drums, each 100 feet long by 30 feet wide and 600,000 pounds. The old drums were housed in a 500-ton framework that was cut and lifted in one piece.
The old drums were removed one by one and replaced with the new drums. All this was done with the help of one of the world’s largest cranes, which is 400 feet tall and designed to lift 1,600 tons. Transporting the crane to the refinery required 70 rail cars, a dozen semi trucks and two months of assembly.
